Bengaluru: In a major embarrassment to the ruling Congress in Karnataka, its no-confidence motion against state legislative council Chairman D.H. Shankara Murthy of the BJP was defeated on Thursday.
Congress lawmaker V.S. Ugrappa moved the no-confidence motion. Deputy chairman of legislative council Marithibbe Gowda of the JD(S) put the motion for voting.
The no-confidence motion was defeated by one vote. Thirty-six lawmakers voted in support of the no-confidence motion when 37 lawmakers opposed it.
“Congress leaders did not take JD(S) leaders into confidence before taking the decision to move no-confidence motion against Shankara Murthy. So, we decided to vote against the no-confidence motion,’’ JD(S) Karnataka state president H.D. Kumaraswamy told reporters here.
Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president G Parameshwara met former prime minister and JD(S) supremo H.D. Deve Gowda on Tuesday evening seeking JD(S) support for the no-confidence motion but the latter advised him to discuss it with Kumaraswamy.
“No Congress leader consulted me till today morning. Congress leaders offered Chairman post for JD(S) if we support the no-confidence motion through media but not conveyed it to me,’’ Kumaraswamy said.
He blamed the Congress leaders for attempting to divide the JD(S) by creating confusion among the JD(S) leaders.
“It has become a habit for national political parties – Congress and BJP – to use JD(S) for their vested interests,’’ he said.
In the 75-member council, Congress has 33 members, BJP 23, JD(S) 13, five independents and 1 chairman. At present 1 seat is vacant in the 75-member house.
