Bengaluru: The process of electing the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly has begun with Congress and BJP MLAs filing nominations for the post. Former minister and senior Congress leader K R Ramesh Kumar and BJP MLA Suresh Kumar filed their nomination papers to Assembly Chief Secretary S Murthy on May 24.
The Speaker of the House is elected from among the members of the house. The election for the Speaker’s post is scheduled to be held on May 25 at 12.30 PM. The election is expected to take place after the floor test of Kumaraswamy’s government on Thursday.
Going by the numbers, Congress’ Ramesh Kumar is likely to be the next Speaker as the Congress-Janata Dal (S) coalition has the majority in the house. Elected as MLA for the sixth time, Ramesh Kumar has served as the Speaker of the house twice earlier during the governments of H D Deve Gowda and J H Patel.
At the same time, JD(S) MLAs K Srinivas Gowda and A T Ramaswamy are contesting for the post of Deputy Speaker. As there were no other candidates so far, Deputy Speaker will be a JD(S) candidate.
