Bengaluru: For the first time in recent months, all the thermal power plants of the state are witnessing a huge shortage of coal, forcing them to shut down their units. Since Tuesday, October 16, four units of the Raichur Thermal Power Plant have stopped power production as there is no supply of coal to the plant.
In the Ballari Thermal Power Plant and Yaramaras Thermal Power Plant, coal stock is available only for the next five days. According to sources, if the coal supply does not resume at the earliest, the state will face a power crisis.
“The Raichur power plant requires around 30 tonnes of coal to operate all its unit. But presently, it is receiving just 10 to 12 tonnes of coal. This has resulted in a shut down of the units,” informed the authorities.
“CM HD Kumaraswamy has already brought the issue to the notice of union power minister Piyush Goyal. There is no reply from him as of now. The state energy department authorities are in talks with the coal ministry in connection with the coal crisis,” they added.
