Bengaluru: By August end, the city will have 112 e-vehicle recharging centres. Presently, there are 11 of such centres in operation in areas including the BESCOM head office, Vidhana Soudha, and Vikasa Soudha.
According to an estimation done in the city, 15,000 e-vehicles are currently running on the city roads, the highest number in the country. To make them more popular, the state government has approved the BESCOM’s proposal to start 101 more charging centres across the city. Each centre is expected to cost anywhere from Rs 5 to Rs 6 lakhs.
“For the first time in the country, a city will have this many e-vehicle charging centres. Once these centres start functioning, the number of e-vehicles is expected to increase,” explained an officer from the energy department.
According to the preliminary data, in Karnataka, around 5,000 e-cars are being used. Among them, 4,200 are in Bengaluru alone. Over 10,000 e-scooters are also in use and most of them are in Bengaluru city.
