Bengaluru: State Chief Secretary K. Ratna Prabha on Saturday inspected the Indira Canteen and a kitchen here for the quality of food served by the flagship programme that provides subsidised breakfast and meals.

The chief secretary, along with senior government officers and BBMP officials, visited the Canteen and inspected the premises. She also bought her own meal for Rs 10 and interacted with people in the queue and those having food in the Canteen premises.

Ratna Prabha asked those eating if their experience was good and whether they visited the canteen often. Among other questions she asked, while having her plate of puliyogare, was if patrons had food regularly at Indira Canteens? was the taste good? the quantity compliant with standards set by the BBMP? And, also if they had any complaints with regard to the running of the canteen or food served.

In response, one of the patrons suggested that Indira Canteen could add additional items to the menu. Another person said it was much cheaper compared to the restaurants in the vicinity.

The officer also asked staff their working hours and whether they were being treated well by the contractor.

The chief secretary and the BBMP Commissioner Manjunath Prasad who was also present, later visited the kitchen on SP Road which catered to the entire Chickpet Assembly constituency.

After checking the kitchen premises for hygiene and utensils used for cooking and distributing food, the chief secretary also visited another part of the premises where utensils were cleaned.

“I am very satisfied with the visit. I will note down all the suggestions and further improve the menu. The government will also look at building the capacity of the kitchens and number of meals served at Indira canteens in BBMP wards whenever the demand increases,” she said.
