BU to offer free distance education courses to 300 prisoners of Parappana

Bengaluru: In a move that is expected to change the lives of hundreds of prisoners living in Parappana Agrahara prison of the city, the Bangalore University (BU) has decided to offer free distance education course to the interested inmates. Till now 300 prisoners have enrolled for various courses.

Prof. KR Venugopal, Vice -Chancellor of the university informed that under the scheme, the Department of Prisons and the University have decided to join hands together. “We will offer free education for all the jail inmates. This will be the turning point in their lives,” he stated.

“Many of the prisoners may score cent per cent in the examination. This education will give a new lease of life for one and all,” he stated.

“Journalism and commerce courses have a huge demand from the prisoners,” he added.

Yathiraj, a 20 -years-old prisoner informed that since he has six more years of jail term to go, he has decided to make the best use of the same by taking up a commerce course.

“I am preparing for a good life after completing my jail term,” he said.

Officers of the Department of Prisons informed that they will hold the contact classes for the prisoners inside the prison.
