Bengaluru: The central government has stressed on the importance of Hindi as a common language, evoking sharp criticism from various quarters, especially the southern states. While many leaders across Karnataka have spoken against the ‘Hindi imposition’, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa had not spoken about his opinion.

However, on Monday, CM BSY took to his twitter handle and expressed his opinion and this tweet surely stands out.

“All official languages in our country are equal. However, as far as Karnataka is concerned, #Kannada is the principal language. We will never compromise its importance and are committed to promoting Kannada and our state’s culture,” tweeted the CM, evidently shunning Modi-Shah’s ‘One Nation, One Language’ theory.

On Saturday, BJP leader and Home Minister Amit Shah had proclaimed that if any language can unite the country, it is Hindi that is spoken the most. Almost every opposition party took exception to the same. All eyes were fixed on BSY, who remained away from making his stand clear on the same.

The former chief minister and senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah tweeted, “Languages are the basics of knowledge, it must be cultivated with love, not by pressure. Our opposition is not about the language of Hindi, but about its forced imposition. My opposition to the celebration of the Hindi day.”

JD(S) leader and former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy also opposed the “imposition” and asked why wasn’t there a Kannada language day.

The statement of BSY, which stands in contradiction to the stand of the BJP national leadership will have repercussions and that will be known only when it unfurls.
