Bengaluru: As against the initial decision of serving free food to the poor and the daily wage workers during the lockdown at Indira Canteen, till March 31, the state government, on Tuesday decided to keep the canteen shut.
Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Tuesday said all Indira canteens will remain closed during the COVID-19 lockdown period to avoid gathering of large number of people.
He justfied the decision saying that closure of the canteen is a must as gathering of large number of people may cause problems.
As the government had decided to supply free food to the needy through the candteen, on the first day of lockdown, the canteens across the state witnessed huge crowd.
In Bengaluru, people were seen queuing up at Indira Canteen at Majestic and other areas to get their plate of idli and sambar free of cost.
The state-sponsored subsidised ‘Indira Canteens’ as of now serves breakfast at Rs 5 and lunch and dinner at a cost of Rs 10.
