Bengaluru: In a tragic incident, a 11-year-old boy lost his life after a reversing road roller knocked him down at Subramanyapura, Bengaluru on Friday.

The victim has been identified as Manu R, the elder son of Ravi Kumar and Manjula and elder brother to Tanu, both daily wage workers. Manu was pursuing his fifth standard education in the government school in Ganigarapalya. According to police sources, a road roller was deputed for road work at Banashankari 6th Stage in Hemmigepura, Thalaghattapura Layout. Manu was cycling on the left side of the newly built road, when the road roller driver in a hurry and not having noticed the boy, suddenly put the roller in reverse. The boy is reported to have been behind the road roller when this happened, causing him to lose his balance and come under the iron wheels of the heavy vehicle.

Local residents, rushed the boy to a nearby hospital. The boy was pronounced dead on arrival. His final rites were conducted on Saturday.

The raged locals staged a protest alleging negligence on the part of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the BDA.

Police have filed a case against the absconding driver of the road roller.

The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), under whose purview the roadwork falls, has taken action against the contractor and the assistant engineer. The BDA also announced that the family of the boy would be compensated.
