Boating suspended at Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary

Mysuru: Owing to the heavy rains and the release of more than 20,000 cusecs of water from the Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) dam on Saturday, the forest department has suspended boating services at the Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary as a precautionary measure, although, the sanctuary will remain open to the public.

The department currently has 13 boats at the sanctuary, that have the capacity to carry 10-12 persons each. These are provided to allow the visitors to observe the birds from up close.

These boating services have been suspended by the authorities who are keeping the safety of the tourists in mind, as the water flow and rise in the water levels can pose a serious threat to their lives. The boating service will resume once the outflow rate from the reservoir declines.

Speaking to Newskarnataka Siddaramappa, the Deputy Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) said, “The water level increased at the sanctuary and as a precautionary measure we have suspended the boating services. It will resume once the water level declines. Every day at an average, more than 1000 people used to make use of the boating facility, especially to have a close look at the birds. During the weekends and holidays, the number may cross 1500”. Siddaramappa visited the sanctuary on Saturday, to get appraised of the reality and situation at the ground level.

The birds are not expected to be harmed by the release of water from KRS as many of the migratory birds have already vacated from the area and will be back only in November. A few birds remain at the sanctuary but, they are nesting on the tree tops. The sanctuary will face real problems only if more than 2 lakh cusecs of water is released. Back in the year 1991, 2 lakh cusecs of water were released from the dam, which severely affected the sanctuary.
