Bengaluru: Puttur is a medium sized town in the Dakshina Kannada district and most people would assume that nothing major ever happens here. However, unbeknownst to them, a resident from this town was running an international red sanders (also known as red sandalwood) mafia, which was busted by the city police late on Saturday night. They had been on the lookout for him for the last 10 years!

Abdul Rasheed, alias Puttu Bayar (48), is the arrested kingpin for whom the police were searching since 2008. He was arrested along with ten of his associates. Police seized red sanders worth over Rs 4 crores from his possession.

“He was running a red sanders international mafia. He ruled the entire red sanders mafia of South India. They were using cargo services to transport the pieces of red sanders. He had established such a network that he had a huge demand for red sanders from the whole of Asia,” informed an officer.

The gang was traced by CCB inspectors, led by S K Maltesh. “When he began his investigation, he found that the police were trying to locate him for the past ten years. The CCB police team were finally able to nab him,” he added.
