Bengaluru: Bengaluru has officially joined the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group. London Mayor Sadiq Khan and BBMP mayor R Sampath Raj have signed an agreement in this regard.
C40 is a network of major cities like London, Paris, Los Angeles and Copenhagen working together to reduce greenhouse emissions and creating models that other cities and governments can adopt. A total of 40 corporations across the globe are part of this C40 group. Sadiq Khan is leading this group of mayors.
Bengaluru Mayor R. Sampath Raj will co-chair with Khan the newly formed ‘Air Quality Network’ under the C40 network to tackle rising air pollution.
As part of the agreement, the BBMP will host a global seminar in the month of March 2018 on climate change in the city. Beside this the BBMP has also pledged several initiatives to bring down the air pollution level in the city through various interventions, including the launch of electrical buses. The BBMP will extend financial support BMTC on procuring 150 electrical buses.
Speaking on the occasion, Sadiq Khan observed that with more than 10 million population, Bengaluru will play a crucial role in the efforts of C40 groups in bringing meaningful changes in the climate change issue.
