Bengaluru: Following the findings that only 25 per cent of the city’s residents are segregating the waste at source and handing it over to the Paura Karmikas, the BBMP has decided to impose fines on all those who fail to segregate the waste at the source. The new system will come into effect from January 1, 2019.

According to the sources in the BBMP, an executive order in this regard will be issued in a day or two.

“In the year 2017, the waste segregation at source was around 60 to 70 per cent. It has come down to 25 per cent in the year 2018. If the waste is segregated at source, the burden on the BBMP waste management units will come down drastically. To ensure that the residents follow the directions, the BBMP has decided to impose a fine on all those residents who hand over waste without segregating,” informed an officer from the BBMP.

“A penalty of Rs 100 will be imposed on first time offenders. It will be Rs 200 for second-time. The amount will increase according to the number of offenses,” he added.
