Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is setting its foot on an avenue less taken. After private companies showed little interest in its ambitious plan of generating electricity using waste, the BBMP has now decided to do the same itself. The plan is to generate a unit of electricity using 1,000 tonnes of waste.

The BBMP has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with two foreign companies to establish the unit to produce electricity from waste. Preparations are going on to construct 2 units to produce electricity from waste at Kannahalli and Mavallapura, with an expenditure of Rs.50 crore each. It would help the BBMP in managing around 3,000 tonnes of waste.

However, as locals are opposing any kind of waste processing units in the area, the BBMP officials are preparing a project report to start the new unit. After collecting opinion of the Corporators, it has been decided to construct the unit with a tender, informed official and they have also decided to request funds from the government, as it should not become a burden for the BBMP.
