Bengaluru: Minister for Bengaluru Development K J George on Tuesday strictly warned all Joint Commissioners of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) against any laxity on their part with regard to dealing with issues related to public.

Addressing a meeting in presence of Urban Development Additional Chief Secretary Mahendra Jain and BBMP Commissioner N Manjunath Prasad, the minister exhorted the Joint Commissioners to concentrate more on issues like the functioning of solid waste processing plants and movement of garbage in their jurisdictions. He expected the Joint Commissioners to ensure segregation of garbage at source itself and the plants were used at optimum level.

“Superintendent Engineers should also visit the plants regularly to monitor the situation,” the minister suggested.

Joint Commissioner (SWM) Sarfaraz Khan explained to the minister that there were seven plants working in the city and handled 1700 tons every day.

“Over 53 per cent of the total solid waste generated in the city was being segregated every day,” Khan said.

He said the BBMP also planned to introduce static compacting system by setting up of 50 transfer stations initially so that the waste collected by autos could be dumped there and transferred to plants after the process of compacting. “This measure is aimed at ensuring the city clean and avoid black spots,” he added.

As regards introduction of Biometric system for conservancy workers, Manjunath Prasad brought to the notice of the minister that 500 mustering stations had been established across the city to enable conservancy workers to put their signature thrice a day. “Nearly, 20000 conservancy workers have signed today,” he added.

The minister has also discussed issues related to purchase of 34 Mechanical Sweepers and Robotic Machines. He also advised the Commissioner to interact with other major cities where similar services had been put to use and take suitable action.

Karnataka Compost Development Corporation Limited Chairman A. Kenche Gowda was also present.
