Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has made up its mind to rejuvenate 60 tanks in the city. The corporation has already submitted a proposal to the Urban Development Department to earmark Rs.200 crores for this purpose in the budget.
The water sources, which were under the supervision of the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) were recently handed over to the BBMP. In the last budget, Rs.50 crore was provided for the rejuvenation.
According to BBMP Lake Section Executive Engineer, the project has been designed for the development of Begur, Benniganahalli, Vibhuthipura, Chunchaghatta, Sarakki, Somasundarapalya, Boganahalli and Hoodi lakes. Sarakki lake is being developed with an expense of Rs.5.5 crores. The work plan has been charted out for the development of Begur lake- 123-acre water source.
“There are many lakes in the city and there is need for more funds for their rejuvenation. The government should provide at least Rs.250 crore and if we get the same fund continuously for three years, we can develop all the lakes,” he added.
In the proposal, BBMP officials mentioned the names of Kalkere- Rampura, Hulimavu, Chikkabegur, Nagareshwara Nagenahalli, Basavanapura, Basapura, Junnasandra, Seetharamapalya, Mahadevapura, Gunjurupalya, Panattur, Gubbalala, Vasanthapura, Konanakunte and Doddakallasandra lake and demanded for the funds.
The officials also informed that Sewage Water Treatment Plants (STP) are being established in six lakes of the city using the last budget fund (Rs.50 crore).
