Bengaluru: The Bengaluru Bruhat Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has started building a skywalk at the Cantonment Railway Station intersection in Vasanth Nagar amid stiff opposition from the corporator and the public.
The skywalk will be equipped with lifts and escalators and will be built with a public-private partnership.
The BBMP told reporters that it is building the skywalk on public demand.
M K Gunashekhar, the corporator from Jayamahal says that there is no need for a skywalk as there is a signal crossing in the area.
According to residents of the area, the BBMP is building the skywalk to make money from the advertisements. The residents alleged that the skywalk will not be useful for the elderly and the differently abled people.
Media reports say that the BBMP is building the skywalk free of cost. The construction of the skywalk is under Develop, Build, Fund, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) basis by the advertisement companies. The advertisement companies would be paying monthly ground rent to the BBMP.
