Bengaluru: The Adani group won the bids for the operation and upgrade of the Mangaluru airport for the next 50 years. The Airport Authority of India (AAI) announced the successful bidders on Monday, February 25. February 14 was the last day for the bidding.

It can be recalled that the Mangaluru airport was inaugurated on December 25, 1951 by the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who had arrived on a DC-3 Dakota aircraft.

According to the AAI sources, three companies- GMR, Adani Enterprise, and CIAL had shown interest in Mangaluru airport.

However, many say that the news is expected to hurt the BJP in the coming election. Voices against the privatisation of the Mangaluru airport is being heard and they say that after the Vijaya Bank, another jewel of Dakshina Kannada is all set to be privatised.
