Bengaluru: The state government approved the BBMP proposal of procuring 34 automatic sweeping machines. These machines are expected to replace 3,400 poura kamikas who are presently cleaning the city roads.
According to BBMP special commissioner (solid waste management), D Randeep, in May 2017, eight machines were brought. Now, the state government has permitted to buy 17 such machines and then purchase 17 other on a lease basis. These machines can clean 500 kilometres of road in a day,” he explained.
One machine:100 poura kamikas: According to an estimation, a machine can do what 100 poura karmikas do in a day. Cost of a machine is Rs.70 lakhs.
According to D Randeep, to ensure transparency, it has been decided to install GPS to all these vehicles beside video graphing. “Working in dust condition is not an easy task for the poura kamikas who often develop health complications. But these machines are an answer to all the problems,” he said.
