bsy curfew 24122020Bengaluru: Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa took another U-turn on Thursday when he withdrew the night curfew mere hours before it was to be implemented in the state.

It can be recalled that a day after stating that there would be no night curfew in the state, Yeddyurappa announced a curfew in Karnataka on Wednesday from that day itself till January 2 from 10 PM to 6 AM. This was later changed to December 24 to January 2 from 11 PM to 5 AM.

After the night curfew drew objections from the public, the CM consulted the Cabinet ministers and senior officials and decided to withdraw the decision.

Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah had criticised the move, saying that the decision to impose a night curfew itself was amusing. “Except for private vehicles, the government allowed buses, taxis and autos to ply. This is the decision of a mad government,” he said.

In a statement, BSY said that the curfew was imposed “based on experts’ opinion” in order to curb the spread of the new Covid-19 strain that was detected in Britain and other countries. “However, as the public opined that a night curfew is not necessary, it has been decided to withdraw the same after discussions with Cabinet colleagues and senior officials,” he said.

The CM then urged the people to practice self-restraint by wearing face masks and ensuring social distancing and asked them to avoid “unnecessary” travel and strictly follow the Covid-19 regulations set by the government “to help stop the spread of the virus”.

It can be noted that the government found that 2,500 passengers had arrived from Britain to Karnataka since December 1.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting with the members of the Karnataka Technical Advisory Committee (K-TAC) for Covid-19 at the Chief Minister’s home office here on Wednesday, health minister Dr K Sudhakar said, “Details of the passengers are available and every single passenger will be kept under strict vigilance. RT-PCR test will be conducted if found symptomatic.”

The minister maintained that the state government had identified four elite institutes in Bengaluru, including NCBS, IISc and NIMHANS, to study the genetic sequence of the virus.
