Badami: Expressing anguish over the decision of the central government to shutdown Raichur Thermal Power Station (RTPS), Former Chief Minister and Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader Siddaramaiah has demanded the state government to immediately discontinue the power purchase from the central government and Adani companies.

Speaking after launching development works on Friday, he said that the State is generating surplus power.

“ Currently, a whopping 35,098 MW power is being produced in the state, where the requirement is only around 11,000 MW”, he claimed.

He said that besides stopping the purchase of power from the central government and other private companies, the state government should explore the possibilities of selling the additional electricity to other states.

“ When I insisted the officials concerned about generating good revenue via selling electricity to other states – the officials hardly showed any interest. It is because of the poor planning of the officials, we are still buying the power from others”, he charged.

Lashing out at the government for increasing the power tariff, Siddaramaiah pointed that, “When compared to Kerala, Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, the Karnataka government has imposed the highest tariff on power. I am perplexed and not able to understand why the state government frequently increases the power tariff amidst the surplus amount of electricity production in the state? questioned Siddaramiah, “he urged the government to look into the issue and implement the people friendly tariff.”

Lift Irrigation Project:

“The people of Badami have high expectations on me as former Chief Minister represents their constituency, so, I have planned many projects including to provide 24×7 drinking water supply in Badami and Kerur towns. In the alliance government, a Kerur Lift Irrigation project worth Rs 500 crore was announced but the funds were never allocated reasoning financial constraints. In regard to this, I have spoken with the Water Resource Minister Ramesh Jarkiholi to grant funds in the coming budget, who have assured of allocating,” added Siddaramaiah.

If this project is implemented it will help in two ways one is to provide drinking water supply around the clock and irrigate thousands of hectares of dry land in Badami constituency, said the former Chief Minister.

Bagalkot Medical College

Siddaramaiah urged DCM Govind Karjol, who was on stage, to get the funds for the construction of Government Medical College in Bagalkot. “I had sanctioned medical college when I was Chief Minister in the budget. But the project never took-off. Now, I give the responsibility of getting funds to start the project to Karjol, who is a district minister. A government medical college is the need of the hour for the district, which will improve the health infrastructure in the region,” stated the former CM.

Speaking on the occasion, DCM Karjol said that, “Amidst the covid crisis the state government is giving prominence to the education of poor and backward classes by establishing more residential schools in the state. Karnataka has the highest number of residential schools and hostels in the country. The government is bound for the overall development of the state with implementing people-friendly programs,” added Karjol.

Minister, B. Sriramulu, MLC R B Timmapur, ZP President Bayakka Meti, DC Captain Dr. K Rajendra, Department of Tourism, director, K N Ramesh, and other elected members and officials were present.
