Bagalkot: Former chief minister and CLP leader Siddaramaiah has requested not to neglect one’s mother tongue Kannada, irrespective of which ever language one wishes to converse in.
Addressing the gathering at Kannada Madhyama Award ceremony organized by the Kannada Development Authority, here on Sunday, June 30 at Kalabhavan of the city he said learning Kannada is the need of the hour.
Siddaramaiah thanked the parents for sending them to Kannada medium schools inspite of domination of English language. He also congratulated students who not only cleared the SSLC and PU board exams with highest marks writing in Kannada, but also those who actually studied in Kannada medium schools and cleared the exams.
He said, “Nowadays mother and father wish their children to call them as ‘Mummy’ and ‘Daddy’ instead of expecting them to call ‘Amma’ and ‘Appa’ (mom and dad called in southern India). I’ve taught my children to call us ‘Amma’ and ‘Appa’ only. This must be the culture.”
Meanwhile, he expressed his unhappiness over the Supreme Court rejecting the Karnataka state government’s plea against the court’s decision of giving the choice to parents of admitting their children in any medium school and ruling out compulsion of language.
