Dalit youth ends life, family alleges ‘police torture’

Kolar: Enraged after a 20-year-old Dalit youth committed suicide following alleged harrassment by police, an angry mob attacked Narasapura police outpost in Kolar district here on Monday, August 1.
According to a report in New Indian Express, the Dalit youth named Manjunath a resident of Ambedkar Nagar hanged himslef at his residence. Vemgal police had called Manjunath, who is said to be a rowdy-sheeter, as a routine call-up at the station. Four other rowdy-sheeters too were called to the station. However, Manjunath’s family alleged that he came home and ended his life due to police harrassment.

But the police clarified that it was a routine to call rowdy-sheeters to the station every six months.

The angry mob ransacked the police station, smashed the furniture and agitated by keeping Manjunath’s body in front of the station.
