11 catering workers from Kolar die in lorry-autorikshaw mishap

Kolar: In a tragic incident, eleven people were killed in a lorry-autorikshaw mishap near Halageri taluk on Monday, April 25.

Kusuma Thatti, 14, Veerappa Goneppa Veerapura, 35, Niranjani Shivappa Harijana, 32, Asha, 18, and her mother Bibi Jaan, 40, Saroja Nagaraj Sabarad, 45, Gangamma Langti, 50, all from the Weavers’ Colony at Kukanur in Yelaburga taluk of the district, Nagaveni Suresh Thatti, 13, from Koppal and auto driver Shivamurthy, 32 are the deceased. The identity of two other deceased is yet to be identified.

Shakuntala, Nirmala, Fatima, Annapoorna, Lakshmi and lorry cleaner Dawal Sab have been injured in the accident. Annapoorna and Lakshmi who suffered serious injuries have been shifted to the Kims Hospital in Hubballi for treatment. The others have been admitted to the district hospital here.

They were all employed in a food catering service in Kukanur. On the day of the mishap, they were reportedly returning after serving food at a marriage function at the Huchchireshwara camp in the taluk.

The autorikshaw was completely damaged due to the impact of the mishap.

The lorry fell into a roadside field after hitting several trees and electricity poles.

Meanwhile, MLA Basavaraj Rayaraddy has assured compensation of Rs 1 lakh each would be provided to the kin of those who died in the mishap.

A case has been registered at the rural police station.
