Cleanliness drive on highways of Kasargod

Kasargod: The district administration here had organised a cleanliness drive on the highways of the district. More than 4,000 people participated in the cleanliness drive and collected 15 metric tonnes of garbage from the waysides of the highways of the entire district.

The district administration conducted this cleanliness drive as a part of health safety programme in collaboration with different organisations and local administrative offices.

About 2,600 people from different organisations, people’s representatives, government employees, teachers, MGNREGA workers, Kutumbashree workers, Haritha Keralam members, students, police, NSS, residents’ associations and youth clubs participated in the massive cleaning programme along with others.

The entire district was covered under the programme. As much as 229 km of the highway side was cleaned.

Deputy Commissioner Dr Sajith Babu inaugurated the cleanliness drive in Thalapady. Gloves, masks, garbage bags etc., were distributed to the participants of the cleanliness drive programme by the district Cleanliness Mission Centre.

The garbage collected was stored in Chimeni Horticulture Corporation, Pilikode Agriculture Research Centre and government sites near KINFRA, Sitangoli will be recycled shortly, said an MGNREGA authority.

Delivering the inaugural speech, Dr Sajith Babu said that clearing the garbage voluntarily was a noble deed. “Throwing garbage in public places is abusive behaviour. Garbage thrown by irresponsible people leads to dirty roadsides, environmental pollution and health hazards. Continuous public support is required to maintain cleanliness on the roadsides, said Dr Sajith.

Cleanliness Mission District Convenor C Radhakrishnan, Haritha Keralam District Convenor MP Subramanian, Kasargod Tahsildar Shahul Hameed, Manjeshwar Tahsildar P John Verghese and representatives of other organisations were present at the venue.

The garbage on the sides of the national highway from Thalapady to Manjeshwar was cleared by the 52 student police cadets of Kunjathur Government Vocational Higher Secondary School along with community police, police officer Umesh Naik, ACP P G Anitha, government local body officers, people’s representatives and others.
