Kasargod: As a precautionary measure against the looming water crisis due to rising temperature, the district administration here has decided on Saturday, May 4, to construct ponds and collect water from rivers in the district.
In the first phase, 418 ponds will be constructed on the five river shores of Manjeshwar town.
Check dams will be constructed across the rivers at Manjeshwar, Shiriya, Uppala, Kumble and Mogral along with small ponds.
The project of 418 ponds will be carried out in private as well as government properties.
Deputy Commissioner Dr. D Sajith Babu has directed the departments concerned to begin the construction by May 15.
Check dams and small ponds will reportedly, be constructed according to the inflow of water.
The following number of check dams will be constructed-179 in Shiriya, 150 in Mogral, 74 in Manjeshwar and 4 in Kumble.
DC Sajith Babu has decided to continue the initiative next year as well and construct 5000 ponds.
He said, “The funds will be utilised from the Kasargod Development Package.”
District Soil Conservation Officer V M Ashok Kumar, Kasargod Development Package Special Officer E P Raj Mohan and other officials were present in the meet.
