Karkala: A mentally unstable man who barged into a house at Kendinje-Bola cross, brutally attacked three women, leaving a six-year-old girl severely injured.
The injured are Rohini (60), Sapna (40) and Manvi (6), who were attacked on Monday.
It is said that the main door of the victims’ residence was left open and seizing the opportunity a mentally imbalanced man gained entry. When Sapna objected, he first attacked her and then surged ahead holding a pick-axe that was inside the house. On reaching one of the rooms, the man attacked Manvi who was fast asleep. When Rohini rushed to the child’s rescue, he did not even spare her.
After opening a cupboard in the room and pulling out the commodities stashed inside it, the accused then settled down at a corner of the room. The locals who rushed to help the residents of the house tied up the attacker and handed him over to the local police.
The police admitted the accused to Taluk hospital. Meanwhile, Manvi, who has suffered severe head injury is undergoing treatment at KMC Hospital Manipal.
Who is this accused?
The accused has been identified as Umesh alias Neeladhar (25), son of Bhadregowda-Shivamma couple from Kushalnagar, Kodagu.
It is said that Umesh was an SSLC dropout who learnt mechanical work and started working as a bike mechanic. It is said that about 10 years ago, Umesh had attacked a local resident in Karkala and a police case was filed against him. Close on the heels of this incident, he had attempted suicide. After this incident, Umesh started showing signs of mental disorder and had undergone treatment in Bengaluru and Shivamogga. Over the last four years, Umesh was living with his brother, but he had left the house saying he was going back home and never returned.
Umesh has been forwarded to Wenlock Hospital.
