Manipal: On the occasion of the World Diabetes Day, Kasturba Hospital Manipal will be organising a Diabetes Awareness and Screening programme on November 11 from 9 am to 4.30 pm at the Dr T M A Pai Hall II here. Dr H S Ballal, Pro Chancellor, Manipal University will inaugurate the programme and an Awareness Poster Exhibition will be inaugurated by Dr Pragna Rao Dean – KMC Manipal.
Dr Col M Dayananda, Medical Superintendent and COO of Kasturba Hospital, Manipal said that the Free Screening programme includes evaluation by the departments of General Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Cardiology, OBG, Nephrology and Neurology and Ophthalmology (Eye). “The Diabetic Foot Clinic of the Physiotherapy Department will offer free foot examination including the neurological, musculoskeletal and vascular assessments,” he said adding that blood sugar testing and ECG would be done for those who are recommended. He also said that there would be a free diet counselling offered to the diabetics.
The Awareness and Educational Poster Exhibition will be organised in association with the Manipal College of Nursing and various clinical departments contributing various angles of preventive care messages for the society.
India is now branded as the Diabetes Capital of the World with about 6.5 crore people diagnosed with diabetes. India has one of the highest diabetic population in the world and the occurance of diabetes in India is 9.1% among men and 8.3% among women.
