Roads riddled with potholes, Councillors blame contractors for low quality works

Karkala: “Low quality construction work has been carried out by contractors and engineers. Because of their responsibility, we are blamed”, alleged the councillors cutting across party lines. “Since the concretization and the road construction works are of low quality, they erode quickly in the rainy season”, they alleged during interactive meeting with public to resolve grievances.

Councillors Sunil Kotyan, Prakash Rao, Mohammad Shareef gave opinions about the poor quality of work undertaken in the locality. Municipal president Rahmath Sheikh while addressing said, ” we had inspected the works closely but we could not make out the quality. Only the officials can find out the quality.” However she assured that she would ensure carrying out good quality work with the help of the concerned contractors.

Yogish Devadiga, Sunil Kotyan and Nalini Acharya raised the issue of Wells which are in a bad condition due to drainage mess in Shivathikere, Hiriyangadi and Hawaldarabettu. Naveen Devadiga wanted the ongoing work near Gazriya Hospital to be completed.

Divya D Pai advocated concretization of the Salmara road. Officers also put forth a proposal to construct toilets in the Gandhi Maidan. Prakash Rao demanded to take action against those contractors who have carried out low quality road construction work at Danashale.

Chief officer Rayappa promised to take action against those contractors who have performed low quality work, by withholding pay bills.

In the meeting it was agreed that the Municipality would purchase two tipper lorries and also provide wages for the drivers. It was decided to go in for the Europe model wherein police officers can take legal action to prevent waste disposal and other activities in the area. Chief Officer Rayappa thanked all who contributed for social cause of Waste management. Rs. 1.25 lakhs has been collected from donors for the waste management he said.

The meeting was presided over by Rehmath Sheikh. Vice president Shashikala Rane, standing committee member Vinnibold Mendonca and Chief officer Rayappa were also present.
