Karkala: Government rules which are meant to be followed are first violated by the government’s workforce.

Despite the rule that no bar or wine shop should be operated within a radius of 100 meters of any educational institution and temple, many such outlets continue to operate in the undivided Dakshina Kannada district.

Recently, a bar and restaurant has come up in Belman, which is located very close to a Government Pre-University College. Although, a few locals and the college management resisted the move, it continues to operate.

Besides, several cases of eve-teasing of students of the nearby college were also reported, but no action was initiated.

On Thursday, Superintendent of Police Annamalai instructed their police force to strictly implement provisions of Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Supply and Distribution) Act. However, the district has turned deaf ears to the pleas of locals to withdraw permission, which allowed running of pub adjacent to the college.

Udupi Deputy Commissioner R. Vishal told Newskarnataka.com that they have not received any complaints. We will verify it, if someone issues a written complaint, he said.

Soumya Latha, Inspector of Excise Department, Udupi-Karkala said that she recently took charge as the inspector and was not aware of the matter. “I will go to the spot and verify in two days, if the distance between the pub and college violates the law ”, she said.
