Kasthurirangan report, Minister in-charge to personally visit 21 villages

Udupi: While speaking at a Cabinet Sub-Committee meeting on the K. Kasturirangan Report, the Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake assured the public that he will be personally visiting all 21 villages with officials to collect their opinion on Wednesday, February 25.

The State government has formed a cabinet sub-committee headed by D K Shivkumar, Minister for Power; T B Jayachandra, Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs and Ramanath Rai Forest Minister. The committee has come-up with a few recommendation that seek relaxation from the stringent clauses in the KR Report on Conservation of Western Ghats.

The Committee recommended more than 50 % of the“natural landscape” in the geographical area will be included under western ghat, the State government would urge the Union government to consider only those villages which had natural landscape is more than 50% of geographical area as eco-sensitive. earlier it was just 20%.

 Out of 33 villages, 17 villages are already excluded from the KS Report, 11 in Kundapur taluk and six in Karkala taluk. Udupi District has 91% of the land covered by forest and 9% is other area than forest. The farmers demanded to declare 9% as cultural and withdraw the KR Report from this district.

Meanwhile, the Sub-committee said that KR report will not stand against the development of the district. Red category industry, thermal plants, big buildings, stone quarry, hydroelectric project and wind mill projects will not be banned but all the activities will come under the Environment Regulation Act.

V. Sunil Kumar, Karkala MLA, said that public opinion in this regard is must and demanded clarification for  every aspect in the report. He urged that the State government to give 10 days’ time to study the report and then hold a meeting again.

Halady Srinivas Shetty, Kundapur MLA, said that importance to be given to the farmers and development activities. B. Ramanath Rai, Forests Minister assured that State government would convey the public opinion without bias to the Union government. “We are committed to protecting the interests of the people, no one will be affected with this report after subcommittee recommendation” he said.
