Karkala: Despite upgradation of the Taluk government hospital in Karkala, many old electrical equipments have been found to be not in working condition and as it is affecting the patient services, alternatives have to be found. There is a team of specialists doctors and staff at the Taluk hospital comprising of 100 beds. Residents from Chikmagalur, Belthangady and Moodbidri solely depend on this hospital, however urgent repairs / replacement necessary for some of the electrical equipment which are out of order.

50 kv generator

In 1997, 50kv generator was installed at the hospital. The generator helps the x-ray room, Women’s ward, children ward, men’s ward and outpatients ward at the time of power cuts.  From last few days the generator has stopped functioning and thus it has affected the patients life as there is no other alternative during power cuts.

If the accident victims are brought to the hospital then they have to suffer and will have to wait for hours at the x-ray room. Even the doctors have stopped going for night inspection.

Even miscreants and eve teasers have been making use of the situation and have made life difficult and uncomfortable for the women staff during night time.

The generator has been taken to Mangaluru for repair, but a replacement is necessary urgently. However sources say that as an alternative, hiring generator of 50kv for rent is also difficult as it would be too costly.

30kv generator

Two years ago, in order to augment capacity, an additional 30kv generator was installed and it  supplies power for the emergency wards, labour room, blood bank and lab. However this cannot cater to the wards and outpatient department.

Non-functioning fans

As per the records there are as many as 140 fans in the hospital. Of these, 20 fans are in poor condition. All these non functioning fans are in the wards catering to patients while, in the resting rooms for nurses, X-ray room, blood bank centre, lab, doctors rooms, outpatient ward, Medicine storage centre, Medical centre the fans are in good working condition and usually in these areas, the fans are repaired soon after a complaint is registered. Its only the patients that suffer in the wards from mosquitos and the hot weather.

Plan to install new fans

Dr Jnanesh, chief medical officer of the taluk hospital said, “last year 35 fans, in poor condition were replaced / repaired at a cost of Rs 700 each. In all Rs 24,500 was spent. There is a plan to install new fans at a cost of Rs:1400 each soon. Everyday power cuts are usually for two to three hours. But from few days the patients are suffering as the old generator has stopped working. I have written to the department to install new generator of 50kv, which will solve the problem.”
