Udupi: With the officials deputed by the Udupi District Administration giving a clean chit to Baradibeedu Kambala held on Saturday, it will await the reply from Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) to its report.

The AWBI had filed 21 non cognizable and one cognizable FIRs at Karkala rural police station on Sunday, pointing out that cruelty to buffaloes were a common place during Kambala event organized at Baradi village, in Udupi district on Saturday and Sunday.

Udupi Deputy Commissioner R Vishal said: The Karkala Tahsildar and the deputy director animal husbandry said there have been no violations. They have given this in writing and have also submitted a CD also to substantiate the observations. They state officials were at the venue till early morning till the event got over.
The DC was also unhappy that the AWBI had filed complaints without bringing the matter to its notice. “I have told the officials to write to AWBI that there have been no violations. We will await their reply. In the meantime, the police will also investigate the matter, ‘he added.

He was also surprised how two sets of officials could come up with two different versions of the same event.

Meanwhile sources in Kambala samithi said decide on the next course of action after a meeting likely to be held in the next two days.

Recently the Karnataka High Court through an interim order allowed Kambala under certain conditions stating that there aren’t enough scientific studies done to establish that buffaloes are cruelly treated during Kambala races.
