Karkala: Malaria has been claiming one life every minute across the globe. If we fail to sensitize the society on the gravity of the issue, then there is every possibility of a spurt in Malaria death cases, said Dr Yashodhar, Medical Officer of Nitte Primary Health Centre.
He was speaking at a Social Awareness Programme on Malaria organised by the PHC in association with Prakruti Group of educational institutions of Kantavara-Sanoor. Dr Yashodhar also spoke on the causes and prevention of Malaria.
The programme was earlier inaugurated by Vanaja, President of Kantavara Gram Panchayat. Dr Krishnananda, Taluk Health Officer said the lack of cleanliness was the main reason for the spread of diseases like Malaria, Dengue, Filaria and Chikungunya. Ninety per cent of those who contract Malaria are children under five years who have low immunity, he added.
An awareness jatha which began from the school premises was welcomed at Sanoor by the GP Chief Karunaker Kotian. At the Karkala bus stand area the jatha was welcomed by Dr Jnanesh Kamath, Medical Officer of Taluk Government Hospital. Students shouted slogans and distributed handouts to the public.
Krishnananda Shetty, Gopal Shetty, Health Inspectors Ashok Kumar, Administrative Officer of Prakruti Group of institutions, Raghavendra Shenoy, Principal of the College, Gajanana Bhat, School Principal and others were present.
