IPL Spot-fixing: SC asks to disqualify Chennai Super Kings

New Delhi: BCCI and ICC Chairman N Srinivasan find their backs to the wall afer the Supreme Court on Thursday observed that amid the conflict of interest mentioned in the Justice Mukul Mudgal report, Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) must be disqualified and the ownsership details of CSK and India Cements be presented in the court.

The SC made it clear to the BCCI on Thursday that it won’t let anyone push anything under the carpet and made some stong observations, which include asking the BCCI to act on the findings of the Mudgal report and telling the four non-players mentioned to step aside while the board holds fresh elections.

What’s the composition of the company India Cements? Who are on the Board of Directors of Indian Cements Ltd.? What is the equity held by Srinivasan and his family? Who took the decision to invest Rs. 400 crore in Chennai Super Kings? The SC wants to the know the answer to each of those questions and made clear that the issue of Srinivasan’s conflict of interest is at the heart of IPL controversy.

“The duty of Srinivasan as BCCI president and interest as CSK owner, this is where the conflict of interest lies,” SC said, while adding that there will be no further inquiry into the case. The BCCI will have to act on the final Mudgal report.

“You must take action, now you have facts,” SC told the board on the question of CSK’s disqualification from the IPL with apparent conflict of interest and involvement of its former official Gurunath Meiyappan in betting.

While saying that for now the court is focusing on only the non-players named in the Mudgal report, SC asked the BCCI to hold elections while leaving those names out. The new board then must take actions against those involved in the IPL scam, SC said.

Responding to SC’s observations, the BCCI proposed that an external commission be set up to hand out punishment to persons found guilty in the Mudgal report.

Former BCCI chief AC Muttiah lauded SC’s observations, saying that the BCCI now must act. “The SC has given a wonderful decision. After listening to today’s observations, the board must all quit or convene the AGM to bring in a new president and a new board,” said.

Muttiah, however, said that IPL is a product that needs to be saved but only after it has been rid of all corrupt elements involved.

“IPL is a good product, we should try and save it. It has earned a lot on money for the board and given oppetrunities to many players. Need proper governance,” Muttiah told.
