Shivamogga: In major drawback to Lingayat strongman, former chief minister and BJP state President B S Yeddyurappa, the Janata Dal (Secular)-Congress coalition has come to power in the Shivamogga Zilla Panchayat, the home turf of BSY.
In the election for the post of president and vice-president held in the city on Thursday, Jyoti Kumar of the JD(S) was elected the president, while Veda Vijaykumar, an Independent member who had identified with the Congress, was elected for the post of vice-president.
In the 31-member body, Bharatiya Janata Party has 15 members, followed by the Congress (8), JD (S)-7 and one Independent.
Veda Vijaykumar, the Independent member, had later identified herself with the Congress.
The post of the president was reserved for General (Woman) category and that of the vice-president for BCM “B” (Woman).
For the post of president, Jyoti Kumar of the JD(S) and Arundathi of the BJP had filed nomination papers.
A total number of 16 votes were polled in favour of Jyoti Kumar, while the BJP candidate secured 15 votes.Veda Vijaykumar and Apporva Sharadhi of the BJP had filed nomination papers for the post of vice-president and they bagged 16 and 15 votes respectively.
