Hubballi: Tension prevailed after a banner containing a portrait of Lord Ram was allegedly burnt in Indraprashta Nagar in Old Hubballi on Tuesday. The banner was placed for Rama Navami.

Sources said the local people and the members of Hindu organisations had installed the banners on Monday night. One such banner, containing the pictures of Lord Rama and Shiradi Saibaba was found to be damaged. The right portion of the banner where the picture of Lord Rama appeared was burnt. It was not clear whether the banner was damaged accidently or it was deliberately damaged, they said.

However, as the news spread, people gathered in sizeable number and held a protest condemning the incident and demanding action against the miscreants. Residents in the surrounding areas protested by blocking roads, they also burnt tyres at Anand Nagar Road.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Hanumantaraya and other senior police officials rushed to the spot and tried to calm down the mob. He assured to nab the miscreants at the earliest and install the CCTV in the area. The protest was withdrawn following assurances by police. Nevertheless a case has been lodged at Old Hubballi police station.
