Bangalore : State Energy Minister DK Shivakumar has informed that the State government has dropped the controversial Mekedatu Hydel Project which had invited the ire of the Tamil Nadu Government.
The Minister informed this on Sunday April 20 in an interaction with media men during his visit to Krishnagiri in Tamil Nadu to campaign for Congress candidate A Chellakumar.
“The state government is always committed to adhere to the court ruling. We have dropped the project to avoid any legal tangle with Tamil Nadu,” the Minister said.
He also pointed out that the Tamil Nadu government had earlier raised objection stating that the flow of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu would be reduced if the project was implemented. At the same time, Shivakumar said the project if implemented would have benefitted both the states.
It may be recalled here that State law Minister TB Jayachandra had last year announced that the government would be taking up the project. However, it soon drew opposition from TN Chief Minister Jayalalithaa who contended that the implementation of the project would be in violation of Cauvery verdict. Her government had even moved the Supreme Court in this regard.
