Udupi: Nityananda Shetty husband of Vanitha Shetty questioned the ongoing caste discrimination system at Sri Krishna temple and asked for justice on Saturday, April 19.
He was speaking to the media in a protest organized by members of progressive groups against the practice of ‘Pankti Bheda’ at the Sri Krishna Temple, outside the District Police Office.
He added that, this is not the first time, such instances keep happening every now and then. However it will not come to light as women feels it is a matter of humiliation.
On April 15 Vanita N Shetty, an assistant lecturer of School of Allied Health Sciences, Manipal University, was asked to leave the dining hall of the temple for being a non-Brahmin.
“My wife too was ashamed and came out without reacting. She was disappointed that despite being an educated women and a teacher by profession, she was treated badly,” he said.
Addressing the protesters, G Rajashekhar, Karnataka Komu Sauharda Vedike, president said that, this incident clearly shows that discrimination in the name of ritual and tradition.
The government should bring all temples under its control said Jayanth Malpe.
Vanitha in her complaint addressed to the Superintendent of Police MB Boralingaiah, demanded that the police probe the discrimination meted out at her and take action against it.
