Bantwal : The Bantwal Taluk Panchayat Meeting held here on Wednesday June 4 witnessed heated debates when members expressed anguish over the officials for not responding to the problems of the people.
Raising the issue at the meeting chaired by TP Chief Lalitha Shivappa Naik, Member Dinesh Amtur alleged that there have been times when officials abstained from their office when public needed them the most. “Do you work merely for the sake of salary or honorarium?,” he questioned officials.
Though officials tried to give an explanation that they could not give much attention to problems of the people due to work pressure during election time, the same did not satisfy the members.
Anand Shambur, Vice President of the TP who intervened tried to defend the officials by apprising the councillors of their work load during election time.
The meeting later on resolved to write to the National Highway Authority to reduce the toll charges, to shift the toll plaza from Brahmarakootlu and to take steps to end traffic blockades.
Members also urged authorities to mandatorily participate in all gram sabhas and take steps to implement the resolutions passed. Another demand was to appoint as Nodal Officer only those who have clear cut knowledge about various developmental projects.
The meeting witnessed an altercation between two member Santosh Kumar Rai and Madhava Maave over not extending invitations to the TP Chief and a few ZP members to the function of distributing compensation to areca growers.
Sampath Kumar Shetty, President of the Standing Committee, Cyprian Miranda, TP Executive Officer, Members Aida Suresh, Dinesh Amtur, Lavina D’Souza, Shakuntala Kulal, Pushpalatha Karkera and others participated in the discussions.
