3200 kg gold wires, biscuits seized at Mangalore Airport

Mangalore, April 4: The DRI officials at Mangalore International Airport seized 3,200 Kilo Grams of gold valued at Rs 93, 63,389 on Sunday, April 6.

Gold was seized from the two passengers that are identified as Abdul Nisar and his wife Fousia, a resident of Kumbala, Kerala, who had arrived at Mangalore International Airport on Sunday evening, April 6, 2014 at 7:30 a.m. by Air India Express Flight IX814 from Dubai.

Astutely, they escaped the customs scrutiny and were on their way out, but the swift action taken by the DRI officers at Mangalore International Airport on tip off seized gold wires and pieces of gold biscuits.

The gold was seized by a Non-declaration and concealment in the baggage from the two passengers.

Gold was concealed in a popcorn machine; a car stereo and a digital steamer. The accused also had a five year old child who was also retained along with the above passengers. Both passengers were arrested and remanded to judicial custody.

It is learned that earlier, in the similar way, passengers have tried to smuggle gold but were caught by the DRI officials at Mangalore International Airport.
