Udupi : In an incident that proves the existence of Pankthi-Bedha in Sri Krishna Mutt of Udupi, a lecturer from Manipal was asked to leave the dining hall of the Mutt on Tuesday April 15 as she was a ‘non-Brahmin.’
Vanita N Shetty, an assistant lecturer from School of Allied Health Sciences, Manipal had gone to the Krishna Mutt along with other staff members of her institute to have “prasada” on the occasion of ‘Ugadi’ around 1 p.m. After pooja they had gone to have lunch at the dining hall of the temple where Brahmins had their meals.
Incidentally, of the four colleagues who had accompanied Vanita, three were Brahmins and one was Konkani. Vanita says a person named Shanker Bhat came to her and asked to which mutt she belongs to. She duly replied that she is a non-Brahmin.
A youth then approached her and asked the same question and she gave him the same answer. Vanita says the youth told her that she could not have her meal there and asked her to leave the hall without having the prasadam.
Vanita later narrated the incident to the officials of the Mutt over phone after reaching home. It is learnt, they have apologized for the incident.
