Bangalore Metro on a faster ride

Bangalore: Trains on Bangalores first metro line, the MG Road-Bypanahalli stretch, run at a maximum speed of 67.5 kmph on straight lines and 40.5 kmph on curves. This is according to mandates by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS).

Though it remains to be seen whether the metro rail between Peenya depot and Sampiege Road will indeed be operational by September,it is likely to be a much faster ride. The train has achieved a speed of 80kmph, which is more than the permitted speed in other phases, during trials conducted on this stretch.

Recently, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had said that the Peenya and Sampiege Road line could become operational by September this year, but this is by no means certain. These stretches are waiting for two more technical clearances at the Peenya depot, including exemption from check rails, which are used in curves.

On the 6.7 km stretch on Reach 1, MG Road to Byapanahalli, the speed of the metro trains was reduced by 10 per cent, on the orders of the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety.

This was done although the Research Design and Standards Organisation, Lucknow, had permitted a maximum speed of 75 kmph on straight lines and 45 kmph on curves while issuing the speed certificate. The speed restriction was imposed because this stretch has several sharp curves.
