Mysuru: The body of a suicide victim remained lying on the tracks near old Ideal Jawa Gate (near MNGT) here on Sunday, June 25 with two trains passing over him after he committed suicide by jumping before a train earlier in the day.

The body remained lying on the tracks for nearly three hours before the Government Railway Police finally moved the body for post mortem purposes outraging the public gathered here.

The deceased identified as 48-year-old Ranganna was a resident of Medar Block and is survived by wife and three children. Reportedly, he had committed suicide by jumping before the Bengaluru-bound Malgudi Express train when it was coming from Mysuru railway station. Few minutes after this incident, a Bengaluru-Mysuru train passed over his dead body. Though the GRP personnel were alerted by the Railway Protection Force personnel at 8.45 am itself, they arrived at the spot only around 11.15 am. Ironically the GRP station is located just two to three kilometers away from the accident spot.

Even after arriving nearly two and half hours late to the spot, the GRP officials instead of shifting the body immediately from the railway track, were seen doing Mahazar and taking statements from the deceased’s family members.

To everyone’s horror they also allowed the Bengaluru-bound Tipu Express to run over his body for the third time outraging his family members as well as the gathered public by their attitude. It is gathered that the police took nearly an hour to pick up the body from the track after completing their investigation and other formalities.

Upset over the delay in shifting the body Seethananda, relative of the deceased said “It’s really inhumane on the part of police and authorities concerned. Due to delay in shifting the body for postmortem, my uncle had to come under train for three times. I request the authorities concerned not to ill-treat the dead body. Hope atleast in coming days such ill-treatment are not meted to dead body. It is nothing but insult to injury.”

RPF has a mandate to protect railway properties while the state government run GRP is tasked with checking crime in the stations and around the tracks.

Speaking to Newskarnataka Ajay Sinha, Additional Divisional Railway Manager, Mysuru division, South Western Railway said “I have spoken to our RPF Commandant who will be talking to DGP, GRP that as soon as they get the information they should immediately remove the dead body because RPF are not supposed to touch the dead body”.

S Krishnamurthy, Sub-Inspector, GRP, Mysuru said “All our staff had been for firing practice at Byadralli firing range which is being held twice in a year. Just couple of staffs was there at police station. We came to headquarters only around 11.30am. We had requested RPF to watch the body till our staff come. To avoid loss of evidence, we took photo and still Mahazar was conducted we did not touch the body. If the body would have been touched by an incoming train our staff would have immediately removed the body from that place but in case it won’t touch the body than even if ten trains moves no problem. Soon after coming from firing range our staff visited spot and conducted Mahazar and later shifted the body to KR Hospital for postmortem and handed over the body to the family members.”
