Mysuru: Public Libraries in the state are in great demand reveals a survey. ‘Attitudes of young adults towards public Libraries services in Karnataka’, a survey conducted by University of Mysore (UoM) Library science department professor Khaiser Nikam and Jaya Kumara, reveals that about 83.4% of users of public libraries are students and 16.6% users are married or adults.

The research study was limited to the Young Adult Public Library (YAPL) between 15 and 40 years of age users in Karnataka. The present study provides a glimpse of the young adult public library (YAPL) users’ attitudes and their perception about the public library services in Karnataka. The work was made public on Monday.

The main objectives of the study are to know the profile of the YAPL users, to ascertain the purpose for which they visit the library and to determine the attitudes of the respondents towards quality of library staff. Adding to this, to identify the perception of YAPL users towards reading different types of fiction, to know their opinion about library collection and lastly and to determine their attitudes towards services and facilities of public libraries in Karnataka, said Nikam.

The survey was conducted in 14 city central libraries across 12 districts in the state. Samples were taken out from 1680 YAPL by adopting random sampling method.

The study reveals that the impression about the library services and facilities are significant. Their perceptions towards space, furniture, quality of library staff and print collections of public libraries are highly appreciable and significantly related.

According to the Chi-Square Test, a statistical test, the attitude of young adults towards the marketing and promotional plans of the public libraries to promote and encourage the usage of services and also their perception towards barriers to use library services are significantly different.

However, the overall attitudes, perceptions, impressions, opinions and experiences of YAPL users towards public library services in Karnataka are positive. Despite public libraries being boon to the public, many people hesitate to conduct research on libraries as the area is vast. The survey also reveals that despite internet and latest technologies, large section of the public utilize Public Libraries. People particularly women, children and senior citizens, struggle hard to read magazines, said Nikam.
