Mysuru: They say, journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. True, otherwise how a single step of a Physical Education Director, whose job was to ensure that students excel in sports made sure that people coming to the stadium had a descent place to be seated.Well, we are talking about H S Krishna Kumar, Physical Education Director of Maharaja’s First Grade College who ventured outside his prescribed role to do something that is not expected of him.

Today, due to his efforts, the Volleyball and Kho-Kho courts at the Sports Pavilion have proper seating facilities.

There was a time when lack of seating arrangement had left people in a fix. They could not enjoy he Volleyball and Kho-Kho matches going on at the courts. After seeing their difficulties, Krishna decided to act.

After bringing the issue to the notice of Krishnaiah, in-charge director, Department of Physical Education, University of Mysore notice and under the guidance of BD Kantharaj, Krishna started collecting waste stones which were thrown across the University of Mysore campus and also on footpaths. After collecting all these stones, Krishna with the assistance of grounds men constructed seats at Volleyball and Kho-Kho courts. Former Mayor Purushotham who used to come for regular walk at sports pavilion too helped Krishna in getting waste footpath slabs from Ashokapuram. Krishna also got support from Pulikeshi Shettapanavar, Deputy Directory, Department of Physical Education, UOM, cricket coach Manzoor Ahmed, Hockey coach Ashok Tipsundar, Rudraiah, Dean (Student welfare), UOM and Seshanna.

All of this was done by Krishna without disturbing his regular work and with the success here, Krishna now wants to continue the same work at Kabaddi court as well.

“It is a great sense of satisfaction I gain today when I see people perched on the seats that we laid for them. We did not ask for any monetary help from the University. The kind of support I got for this work only encourages me to do more,” says Krishna.

Lauding the work of Krishna, UOM Department of Physical Education Director (in-charge) P Krishnaiah says that Krishna is a great worker who is always keen on taking responsibilities.

HN Bhaskar, Physical education director, SBRR Mahajana First Grade College also mentioned that the plight of the seats which failed to grab attention of the authorities over the last two decades were set right by Krishna and he must be commended for the feat.
