Mysuru: In order to make sports bodies across the country more professional, Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Institute for Management Development (SDMIMD) will be launching “Sports Management Programme” in collaboration with the Centre of Sports and Management Studies (CS & MS).

SDMIMD which is conducting management education is extending its academic support to the Centre for Sports and Management Studies in designing and offering Certificate Programme in Sports Management (CPSM) of three months duration and Post Graduate Programme in Sports Management (PGPSM) of nine months duration. The programme is aimed at preparing the young graduates and sports enthusiasts for sports management and business environment. The course design and content materialised from this collaborative partnership between SDMIMD and CS & MS focus on transforming the emerging talents into leaders of the sports world.

The founder members of CS & MS Enrico Piperno, former national tennis champion and Indian Davis Cup team coach Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi and even Sania Mirza said, “It is high time that sports bodies are run by professionals which are not the same at present. Currently, most of the sports bodies across the country are run by nonprofessionals or amateurs. Hence we need to educate boys and girls and give them that sort of confidence to run the sports. For many years nonprofessionals have been running the show making the lives difficult for the sports persons including athletes. The Supreme Court intervened in BCCI matters because it was not happy with the style of the Board’s functioning. Every four years, we go to Olympics but the achievements are not great. There will be achievements only if the sports bodies are run by professionals. Sports management is going to grow in a massive way in days to come and Indian sports is looking for a big change over.”

“It was necessary to promote this course because so many league matches including wrestling, Kabbadi, badminton and international events are mushrooming across the country. Our vision is that a top quality education in sports management should be available to everyone who has the drive and ambition for it. Our diploma programmes are designed for a new generation of sports, with its multiple professional sports leagues mushrooming in every discipline and city based franchisees buying and selling players and cashing in on their brand image in collaboration with corporates, like never before. All this obviously needs the backing of high quality, top of the line support staff and professionals, who facilitate the smooth operation of these leagues, professional teams and their related activities, be it in video and data analysis, Coaching, building strength and conditioning, logistics and event management or handling contracts, media interactions, photo shoots and the like. This is the area where there is a huge requirement of qualified and trained professionals, who know their jobs. And this is where we come in, with our courses and specialised hands-on training. International Tennis Player Somdev Dev Varman, is the Brand Ambassador for these courses” added Enrico.

H Gayathri, Programme Director, Sports Management and Deputy Director, SDMIMD also mentioned that such courses will really help India do well in the 2020 Olympics. Those who have scored 45 percent aggregate in 10th, 12th and degree are eligible to take up the course. Students in the final year of Degree can also apply. The course will start from June.
