South zone inter-university women Kho-Kho from October 4

Mysuru: After nearly 25 years, the Department of Physical Education, University of Mysore will be conducting south zone level inter University women’s Kho-kho competition at the varsity’s sports ground from October 4 to 7. Kho-Kho players and enthusiasts will have opportunity to see more than 30 matches everyday. 

Over 60 south zone university teams will be taking part in the competition which will be played on knock out cum league basis. Defending champions University of Calicut, runners-up Anna University from Chennai, University of Mysore which stood third and University of Kerala which was at fourth place last year have been directly seeded into quarter finals. Last year, the University of Mysore women’s team won the third place in the All India Inter University competition while men’s team lost in quarterfinals.

D Bharathi, Registrar, University of Mysore said, “For the smooth conduct of the event we have formed more than 12 committees and the preparation for the event is going on in full swing. Hope Kho-Kho where majority of the participants are from rural areas will also get a boost like Kabaddi which has become famous even more than Cricket.”

Krishnaiah, Director (In-charge), Department of Physical Education said, “We have come out with four match court at our existing hockey ground. To start with, for a couple of days, everyday more than 30 matches will be held and it will be an opportunity for budding Kho-Kho players to make use of this opportunity. We will be providing accommodation for all visiting teams and referees.”

In 2015-16, as part of the centenary celebration, UoM had conducted All India Inter University Wrestling for both men and women and South Zone Inter University Hockey competition for women.

MLA Vasu will inaugurate the tournament in the presence of Arjuna Awardee Shobha Narayan, Dayananda Mane, Vice Chancellor (In-charge), UoM and Bharathi, Registrar, UoM at Sports Pavilion on October 4 at 8.30 am. The valedictory will be held on October 7 at 3.30 pm. Former international basketball player Seeth Chinnappa will distribute the prizes.
