Now Mysuru Zoo has thousands of humans too!

Mysuru: Tourists including hundreds of students thronged Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens in the city on Friday following its reopening after being shut for nearly a month. More than 4922 visitors visited Mysuru Zoo on Friday.

On Friday morning, well before the reopening of the zoo, hundreds of students from various educational institutions and tourists from many places formed a queue to gain entry following the clearance given by the Department of Animal Husbandry. The zoo reopened based on the negative results for avian influenza. Mallige Veeresh, Chairperson, Zoo Authority of Karnataka welcomed the visitors to the zoo by giving laddu and even roses to women folks. Kamala Karikalan, Executive Director of Mysuru zoo said that there was no need for the people including visitors and tourists to worry as Mysuru Zoo is now free from bird flu.

Kannan, a tourist from Tamil Nadu said, “On Thursday, through media we came to know about the reopening of Mysuru zoo. For my children, if we come to Mysuru, visit to Mysuru is a must. Really we had a good time. We also felt happy when the authorities welcomed us by giving us Laddus.”

On January 4, the zoo was closed for the public after some free-range and migratory birds died of suispected avian influenza. After National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NISHAD) deduced the test results for bird flu as negative, the zoo was reopened.
