Mysuru: Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens battered by death of animals and birds in the recent past, at last has some reasons to cheer.
Airavathi, an elephant gave birth to a female calf in the famous zoo on July 21. Zoo authorities kept the news under wraps on health grounds for 2-3 days and have named it Parvathi.
Weighing 120 kgs at birth, the calf presently weighs 115 kgs and is in good health.
The renowned zoo has nine elephants in total including five females and an African elephant named Ritchie.
In the last one month, around 7 elephants including a calf died due to electrocution and the birth of new calf has given some joy to animal lovers, though in captivity.
